Judge Darrin Chadd has been a Montgomery County Judge for a little over 6 months. As a Circuit Court Judge his purview includes Juvenile Court and he spent some time discussing that with our membership at our meeting on July 6th.
One of his areas include hearing delinquency cases for juveniles mostly involving theft, battery or drug offenses. At this time there are about 40 pending cases in this area. Most of the cases Judge Chadd has involve CHINS (Child in Need of Services) cases. There are about 80 cases pending right now in his court that must be decided. Although the number may be considered high that is much better than in 2017 when almost 200 cases were active!
Thanks Judge Chadd for speaking with us.
On April 27th, the Crawfordsville Kiwanis Club welcomed Clay Adams, Director of the Montgomery County Salvation Army, as their keynote speaker.
Adams spoke about a nineteen-year-old girl who was caring for her eleven- and 9-year-old siblings. The young girl called Adams asking for help to pay their rent. She had most of it but needed twenty-four more dollars. Adams met with the girl at the apartment complex offices only to find out the girl only owed twenty-two dollars for her rent. The girl was working hard to provide for her and her siblings and had paid all but twenty-four dollars this month. Adams was shocked that she had worked so hard to pay everything for her and her siblings and now only needed the small remainder to pay the rent. Adams asked her if she had any other bills to pay and the girl showed him her eighty-nine-dollar utility bill that was due in two weeks. The girl told Adams that she would get paid next week and could then pay that bill. Adams paid that bill also for the young family.
Adams explained that this is the kind of help that is needed by many from the Montgomery County Salvation Army. So far in 2023 the Montgomery County Salvation Army has helped over one-hundred people throughout Montgomery County and has provided over $6,200 in funds to help these families.
Adams stated that their funding for services like these comes from their annual Red Kettle Drive that you may see at local businesses in November and December around Montgomery County.
“The Salvation Army’s mission is to serve others, and we can’t do that alone,” Adams said. “We rely on the support of volunteers, donors, and community partners to make a difference in the lives of those we serve.” Some of those volunteers are the bell ringers you may see during the holiday season. If you would like to be a volunteer for the Army during their season please contact Adams at New Hope Christian Church.
Adams’ message of hope and community service resonated with the audience and left a lasting impression on all in attendance.

Georgie receives an iPad – a tool for autistic children
The world for an autistic child is full of imagery, rather than words. On an iPad, an autistic child can create a sentence or even story using a series of images. By doing so, the child can communicate with parents, caretakers, and instructors without frustration. Since the iPad is mobile, children with autism can take this communication tool wherever they go.
Three-year-old Georgie Hassel was provided this additional tool to use in his struggles with Autism. Purchased with donations by the community and the Crawfordsville Kiwanis Club, Georgie and his mother, Ashley, attended the meeting on Thursday April 20th, 2023, to receive his new iPad.
The Crawfordsville Kiwanis Club continues to provide tools to children throughout the community through their Adaptive Equipment Program. Donations for this program are always appreciated and can be made by sending them to Crawfordsville Kiwanis, Adaptive Equipment Program, PO Box 611, Crawfordsville IN 47933.
Come on out and visit our club any Thursday at 11:30 in the Donnelly room of the Crawfordsville District Public Library on the lower level.

Dear Friends,
We are posting this today to ask for your help in supporting a little boy in our community named Georgie. Georgie is 3 years old and has autism, which makes it difficult for him to communicate properly with his Mom or his teachers at school. However, with the help of a communication tablet, he has been able to make great strides in expressing himself and engaging with the world around him.
Georgie is like most 3 yr old boys and loves watching cartoons, bath time, riding in his wagon, and squishmellows. Most importantly though, Georgie would like to be able to communicate with his Mom and the therapist he works with.
The Crawfordsville Kiwanis Club has decided to raise funds to purchase Georgie his own tablet so that he can continue to make progress in his communication skills both at home and at school. The device is quite expensive, and we need your help to make this a reality for Georgie.
Please consider donating to support Georgie’s communication tablet. Every little bit helps, and together we can make a big difference in his life. You can donate by sending a check to Crawfordsville Kiwanis, PO Box 611, Crawfordsville, IN, 47933 or by contacting us at [email protected]
Thank you for your generosity and support.

Sheriff Ryan Needham talks to Kiwanis
On June 29, 2023 Crawfordsville Kiwanians were pleased to hear a report from Sheriff Ryan Needham, Montgomery County Sheriff. Sheriff Needham reported that from Jan 1, 2023 through June 28, 2023 the department had 11,341 calls that they had to deal with. They had given out 3,141 traffic warnings and 262 tickets during that time.
Staff included 26 Deputies and officers along with approximately 42 jail guards and employees. Also during that time the jail had 158 inmates.
One of the laws coming into effect in July is the 25 foot rule. Under the new law, which goes into effect July 1, Indiana police and firefighters can order onlookers to stay a minimum of 25 feet away to clear an emergency scene or stop approaching bystanders. Needham said this will help with crowds around an incident scene.
Thanks Sheriff Needham for all that you and your deputies do.
